Shades of Grey, Rotary Anns team up in aid of the elderly

SHADES of Grey and Rotary Anns 101 helped support the elderly at the Glenesk Retirement Village recently.

On Saturday, October 21 at Reading Country Club, the two organisations joined hands to help raise funds for one of their worthy projects, in this instance the retirement village.

Shades of Grey, the fundraising arm of Gauteng’s Blue Suede Heaven Elvis Presley Appreciation Group, was freshly returned from a whirlwind tour of the USA, where they planted the SA flag in the Meditation Garden at Graceland during the 40th anniversary of Elvis’ death. The group was privileged to join the Rotary Anns of Johannesburg South 101.

Rotary Anns 101 (part of the Rotary Club of the same name) has the same aims and objectives as any Rotary Club.

“We have four main projects, but the one we wanted to support with these funds is the one for the old people who live at the Glenesk Retirement Village,” said Jane Soester, president of Rotary Anns.

“There are 25 units there, which is a good size for us to support as there are only five of us on the Rotary Anns committee. We give them a food parcel as and when we can, and at Christmas we would like to give them a bumper one. Now, thanks to Shades of Grey, we will be able to.”

According to Soester, the Glenesk units “are provided by the council, with very little done in the way of maintenance. All the residents only have their government pension, which is spent on rent, bus fare to the hospital and food.”

Lainy Hendry from Blue Suede Heaven (BSH) commented: “So often the older members in our communities are forgotten. We were delighted to have been invited by Rotary Anns to provide the entertainment at their fundraising event. It is great to know that Shades will have contributed to putting smiles on people’s faces and making their upcoming Christmas celebrations extra special.”

BSH is recognised by Elvis Presley Enterprises in Memphis, a recognition that has to be applied for and earned annually based on a positive contribution to local communities or individuals in need.
