Springs schoolgirl wins Caxton Creative Writing Competition

“The Lenovo Laptop sponsored by Matrix Warehouse Computers in Alberton, is a perfect boost for Robyn’s talent,” added Daniel.

“AN icy breeze woke” her from her “deep sleep, and won” her “a competition.”

This year, Caxton Local Newspapers, together with Matrix Warehouse, gave teenagers between Grades Eight and 12, in Ekurhuleni and the City of Johannesburg, an opportunity to win a Lenovo laptop.

To be part of this amazing competition, students were requested to describe, in 600 or fewer words, how writing has helped them in their everyday lives.

“I am weird,” said Jordaan. “Even my mother says so. Sometimes, I’ll talk about something that I think is completely normal, but my mother will listen with a horrified expression.”

The Caxton Creative Writing Competition aims not only to equip South Africa’s youth with the tools to nurture their creative talent, but also to expose them to career opportunities available in advertising, journalism and media – when they have basic creative writing skills.

Therefore, this year’s winner will have the opportunity to be mentored by well-known and trained editors, who’ll assist them in improving their craft.

“Writing stories helps me express my ominous ideas that my friends and family often don’t appreciate hearing,” added Jordaan.

A facilitator of the competition, Daniel Seleme, said the competition keeps growing every year.

“The competition has showcased the great and unfounded talent that we have in the country.

“We urge all writers to continue following their dreams and aim to become better through writing.”

“The Lenovo Laptop sponsored by Matrix Warehouse Computers in Alberton, is a perfect boost for Robyn’s talent,” added Daniel.

The winners were chosen by a judging panel.

The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
