On this day in history: Kurt Cobain committed suicide

On this day in 1994, modern rock icon Kurt Cobain’s body was found inside his home in Seattle, Washington, three days after he took his life. His body was found by Gary Smith, an electrician, who was installing a security system in the suburban house.

The singer shot himself in the head and his death was marred with skepticism from fans and media alike who pinned his death on his wife Courtney Love. This is despite indications that he had killed himself.

Police concluded that Cobain’s death was the result of suicide and this was further confirmed in at least two books, one penned by Love’s estranged father. A documentary title Kurt & Courtney raised doubt and speculation that Love had her husband killed but there has been no evidence corroborating this claim.

Cobain’s downward spiral began taking shape in Italy the previous month, Cobain had gone into a coma and nearly died after mixing champagne and the drug Rohypnol. The public was led to believe that the coma was induced by an accidental heroin overdose, since Cobain had a well-known problem with the drug.

Cobain checked into rehab after his family and friends staged an intervention but left without informing them on March 30.
