Names and their meanings

Searching names and their meanings is an interesting way for parents to go about finding names for their babies.

Whether it’s discovering where your family name comes from, looking for names that hold certain attributes you wish your children to have, or looking for something unique, every name has its own meaning.

Sundahl Garrett says her name was taken from an 80’s actress; “I researched my name when I was younger and I discovered it has Danish and Swedish roots. It means “Strait-valley” (narrow channel of water).

Carina Le Roux, an Alberton resident, says Carina is Latin for “dear one”. “I’ve heard that it is also the name of a constellation and some kind of biological meaning as well”, says Carina.

Carina is also the word used for a keel-shaped structure, the ridge of a birds breastbone, and a cartilage situated where the trachea (windpipe) divides into the two bronchi.

Amadea Kleynhans, from Benoni, says her name is Latin for “Loved by God”. “My mom saw the name and liked it, the rest is history”, she laughs.
