SAFETY TIP: Six ways to keep safe during the holidays
It is almost the end of the school year and that means the start of the holidays. Holidays, though a happy notion and thought for most of us, do have a downside.
Children are left alone at home while parents go to work, malls and entertainment areas are crowded and difficult to monitor, and homes stand alluringly empty while we go away for our much needed break.
“Though we don’t like to think about things like this, as parents we need to be aware that our children are at risk,” says Theunis Kotze, ADT General Manager Inland Region.
He advises parents to use their cell phones to photograph each child individually.
“That way if the unthinkable happens, you will have a very recent photo on your phone which is available immediately. In this scenario every second is vital and so take a second and take that photo.”
He offers some other tips for children to stay safe these holidays:
- If you get separated from your parents or guardians in the shops or mall, go to the nearest sales person or uniformed security officer and ask for help.
- Never ever leave the shop or mall to go to the car or to look for them in the parking area.
- If someone tries to grab hold of you or take you away, fight, kick and scream, make as much noise as you can; shout out “Help. This is not my mom or dad”.
- Always walk or play with at least one other person.
- Always walk along streets you know.
- Never take shortcuts through bushes or empty areas.
If you are going away for the holidays, ensure that your home stays safe.
The first and most important step to take is to ensure that your alarm is in working order. It is natural to forget that your alarm system, like all household appliances, needs to be tested at least once a year to ensure it is working properly.
Another important security tip is to be discreet when preparing to go away.
“People should pack their cars behind closed doors, if possible in their garage. Also homeowners should never leave a message on their answering machine stating that they’re out of town,” advises Kotze.
Additional security tips:
- Advise your security company if you are going away and ensure that you supply all the necessary information regarding key holders, in case of an emergency.
- Inform your neighbours and Neighbourhood Watch of your holiday plans so that they can keep an eye on your property.
- Stop all newspaper and other deliveries and have someone collect all your post. A bulging post box is a dead giveaway that you’re not home.
- If hiring a house sitter, ensure that you teach them how to use your alarm correctly.
- Double check that you have locked and secured all windows and doors before leaving home.
- Ensure that all your outside locks are a minimum of four lever locks or double cylinder security locks. It is also a good idea to check that all these locks are in good working order.
“Holidays should be fun and stress free; we all need to recharge our batteries from time to time. Let’s be extra vigilant these holidays and make sure everyone stays safe,” says Kotze.
