Illegal dumping tackled during National Environment Week

Teaming up to clean up in the spirit of National Environment Week.

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – Illegal dumping in the South has taken a turn for the worst with sofas, used condoms, clothing and broken toys being dumped in public open spaces.

Disgusting litter has been a cause for concern along Comaro Street in Bassonia and South Road in Mulbarton. Kibler Park residents are livid following a discovery of dumped used condoms and other litter on Peggy Vera Road, in a spot scandalously used by prostitutes.

Residents, who joined together for a peaceful march against prostitution on their streets, on May 30, came across the litter stashed in the bushes.

Ormonde residents have also been fighting against illegal dumping near an open piece of land, also used as an illegal road from the suburb and onto Nasrec Road.

Lead SA marked National Environment Week on June 1 in efforts to combat illegal dumping in the country.

“About 198 000 tons of general waste are dumped illegally every year in road reserves and open spaces. If we work together as active citizens and dispose of our waste responsibly, we can have a cleaner, greener and healthier South Africa,” said a Lead SA statement.

Residents are being urged by Lead SA, Pikitup and Clean C to #TeamUpToCleanUp in the spirit of National Environment Week and make an effort to clean up, whether it’s your backyard, street, school or local park.
