ALBERTON- To take part in the Jack Daniels World Barbeque Championship, you have to be invited.

And Team Braai-B-Que from Brackenhurst won second place in the Homeland cooking division of the competition with their delicious fare in 2013.

Corné Bornman, also known as ‘Borries’, and his right-hand man Gareth Daniell or ‘Braaiboy’, have, for the past three years, represented South Africa in the championships in Lynchburg, Tennessee, in the USA.

Bornman is the owner of the family-run Borrisimo’s guest house in Hennie Alberts Street.

The first year in which they participated, the pair won the prize for the best spirit and, with their Makarapa hats and vuvuzelas, it isn’t hard to see why.

THE BRAAI MASTERS: Corné Bornman (left) and Gareth Daniell have represented South Africa at the Jack Daniel World Barbeque Invitational Championships for the last three years.

They occasionally have trial runs in preparation for the competition, which has six categories: pork, brisket, chicken, ribs, cooking from the homeland and dessert.

In preparation for this year’s competition in October, the team will host braai competitions throughout South Africa and the winners from the finals will have an opportunity to accompany them to Lynchburg.

Their passion for braaing has no end, and ‘Braaiboy’ has lit a braai fire every day for the past six years.

“Yes I have braaied every day, even when I’m on a boat or travelling by plane, I make a plan,” he says.
