JRA ignores deadly corner in Winchester Hills

The corner of death has seen at least two or three vehicles a week nose-diving into a koppie where some have lost their lives

A MOTORIST nearly plunged to his death at an infamous corner in Winchester Hills on March 6. Mthunzi Mtshali was on his way to see his sister in the area, when he accidentally made a wrong turn on Xavier Street.

The wrong turn almost cost him his life. When he got to the corner of Xavier Street and Marula Cres, he was thrown by a sharp bend notorious for the danger it poses.

“A man who stays at Mountain View townhouse complex came out almost immediately and shouted if everything was okay, and he came to check on me, I was still in shock,” said Mthunzi Mtshali.

According to the Mountain View resident, the crashing sound of vehicles nose-diving into the koppie has become a sound he’s all too familiar with, and calls to the JRA, JMPD and the ward councillor have proved unfruitful.

Security officer Siyabonga Ngwane showed the CHRONICLE reporter Zesuliwe Hadebe debris left behind by a series of vehicles that have plunged into the koppie, with one Toyota Quantum driver plunging to his death.

Cllr Dos Santos addressed residents’ concerns: “I cannot say why there is not barrier. That is something that I believe should have been done when the development was done along Marula Cres. There are chevron signs as a warning to motorists about a bend to the left. Chevron signs are warning indicators, however I agree that there should also be a barrier.

“Motorists also need to drive at the speed limit, which will reduce a number of accidents at this site and throughout. Speed kills. I will push for the JRA to have a barrier installed, and have other safety measures implemented to help reduce the risk. I will keep you updated with developments.”
