How to create a romantic bathroom retreat

Be inspired by the month of love and bring a touch of romance to your bath time by creating that gentle, soft and wistful look for dreamy days in the bath, all year round.

JOHANNESBURG – Imagine a tranquil bathroom that allows for relaxation and pampering through a choice of romantic colours that vary from simple whites, to pastels and bands of gentle colour.  Think about softer styling and classic accessories.

“Design trends show a move towards transforming the bathroom into a refuge from the pace of the outside world.  No longer is a bathroom a place to just brush your teeth or take a shower, it has become a more integrated space and offers a sanctuary for rest, tranquillity and romance,” says Debra Retief marketing manager at Tile Africa.

Be inspired by the month of love and bring a touch of romance to your bath time by creating that gentle, soft and wistful look for dreamy days in the bath, all year round. Here’s how:

Baths:

“A key piece of any bathroom design is the bath or spa bath if the budget allows,” says Retief. In a romantic bathroom setting, the bath should ideally be free-standing and preferably in the centre of the room if you have the space.  Choose a slipper-bath with the one end slightly higher than the other and claw-feet for that Victorian-era experience.  You could even install an oval bath with steps leading up to it for displaying beautiful storm lanterns or candles.

Showers:

To enhance a nature-inspired and a relaxing space, choose a shower featuring clear glass doors to let natural light in. Create a great shower experience with an extra-large shower rose that mimics raindrops or a multi-spray shower which can make one feel pampered and relaxed, creating a wonderfully romantic frame of mind.

Colour:

Tiles in soft whites and creams or pastel colours such as dusty pinks are ideal when creating an intimate space for rejuvenation.

The final touch is to set the mood with candles, scents and bubbles. “Lighting is one of the most essential and most overlooked parts of creating a romantic atmosphere,” says Retief. Lighting is so important to how we feel and perceive a space.  Whatever the lighting design; it should be easy to control and adjustable for different moods.
