Gravely dangerous Eikenhof intersection

An elderly woman was stabbed on the head and neck after her vehicle during an attempted hijacking

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – An urgent call for extreme caution has gone out to motorists driving on the Old Vereeniging Road after dark.

While residents of Eikenhof and people working at the petrol station at the Lido Hotel have known for a while about the danger at the intersection, they say many motorists still fall victim to robberies and hijackings.

“It’s dangerous out here late at night. This style of hijacking is common at that intersection and on the street going past Jacksons Drift squatter camp,” said a petrol attendant at a filling station nearby to the intersection.

The petrol attendants were the people who assisted the elderly woman who had rocks thrown at her vehicle by three men, who also stabbed her twice in her head and neck as they attempted to hijack her City Golf.

Fortunately the woman managed to escape with her life and received much needed help from petrol attendants, who phoned the police.

The intersection close to Jacksons Drift squatter camp has seen motorists passing on the road being ambushed by criminals, who throw rocks at cars and when the motorists stops, stab them repeatedly.

On January 19, a woman reported to Mondeor Sector two CPF that she was attacked by 30 men who threw rocks at her car, damaging the windshield.

“Driving to the Lido Hotel on the Vereening Road, R82 towards JHB at 21:50 last night I was attacked by about 30 young African men as I slowed down for a red robot. They jumped out of long grass and ran towards me, throwing rocks. They smashed the front window. I accelerated through the red lights and got away. I am in shock. I called the police and was told they did it to an old lady just after me. They stabbed her repeatedly. Our security man says the junction left goes towards Lenasia. Be careful out there,” reported the victim.

Mondeor SAPS Communications Officer, Constable Mnguni confirmed the incident involving the old woman, who was attacked and injured, and revealed that only a single incident of attempted hijacking or hijacking has been reported at Mondeor SAPS. She also confirmed that three men attempted to hijack the victim and not 30 men as is believed.
