Lungile wins Miss Soweto 2014

Lungile competed with 17 other hopefuls.

JOHANNESBURG – South Africa’s favourite maize meal brand and Miss Soweto sponsor, White Star, is delighted to present the newly crowned Miss Soweto 2014, Lungile Buhale (22).

She was named the winner of the prestigious pageant at the finals event held at the Soweto Theatre on Saturday December 6.

White Star Marketing Manager Mokhele Makhothi said: “This year’s finals event was a celebration like no other. The finalists really did Soweto proud, but at the end of the evening there could only be one winner.”

Soweto is South Africa’s biggest township, and the Miss Soweto Pageant – the first of which was held in 1979 – was created to bring awareness to the women of Soweto.

“Miss Soweto becomes a role model for girls of all ages and plays an important role in defining the image of South Africa womanhood based on grace, poise, health and enthusiasm to succeed,” Makhothi said.

Recently voted South Africa’s favourite maize meal brand – for the fifth consecutive year – in the Sunday Times Top Brands survey, White Star is a premium brand and, as a Miss Soweto sponsor, has seen a number of exceptional pageant queens receive the title over the years.

Makhothi said: “This year is no different. Lungile Buhale has proven herself to be an inspirational role model, ready to follow in the footsteps of previous winners who have gone on to represent the woman of Soweto on world stages, such as Basetsana Kumalo (Miss South Africa 1994), Augustine Masilela-Chuene (Miss Universe semi-finalist in 1995) and many others.”

“As South Africa’s number one maize meal brand, and maize meal forming an integral part in the South African diet, White Star and Miss Soweto are the perfect fit. We are proud to be involved in this pageant again this year and know the ladies will do us proud,” he concludes.

Lungile is studying Archaeology and Media studies at Wits University. The Dube girl has a long term goal of empowering the youth on social skills through an NGO company she wishes to own one day, along with an events company.
