Calvary Christian Colleges hosts exciting two-day soccer tournament

The tournament proved to be a resounding success by bringing together learners, parents and the community.

The second annual Interhigh Six-a-Side Futsal Soccer Tournament, organised and presented by Calvary Christian College, recently took place at the school.

It was a spectacular event showcasing the skills of the eight schools whose talents were on display. The eight teams played each other in two pools over two days.

On Friday night the field was floodlit to give the teams the experience of playing under floodlights and then on Saturday, they played under normal conditions.

For many of the teams, it was their first time to play on a flood-lit field and they all certainly enjoyed the experience.

The seven invited schools, other than the host school, Calvary Christian College, included among others Forest High, Elethu Themba, Die Fakkel and Nkosi’s Haven.

The soccer was of an extremely high quality delivering spectacular shots from the various strikers but equally great saves from the goalies. There are no throw-ins’ in Futsal – the ball is simply put on the line and the game is resumed – and so the game is played at a very lively pace.

No slide-tacking limits the number of injuries, although the paramedics still had to attend to some injuries.

Great music and the Calvary cheerleaders kept the spectators entertained during the changeovers between games, while the tuck shop kept them well-fed. The event was certainly made more exciting by the live commentating of every game by a talented young man by the name of Lihle Ntshuntshe.

The semi-finalists included Calvary Christian College and Die Fakkel in the first match and Forrest High and Elethu Themba in the second game. Die Fakkel and Forrest High went through to the final which was won by Die Fakkel by 2-0.

The prizes were awarded as follows:

Best goalie – Samson Banda of Die Fakkel

Most Influential player of the tournament – Chad Martin of Calvary Christian College.

Best Manager – Mr Nelson of Forrest High

The runners-up were Forest High

The winners were Die Fakkel.
