Baby Boomers, the future of Union Rugby Club

Childhood development in rugby can just be a fun activity or it can, create a future star.

The Baby Boomers is an early childhood development programme that is part of the Union Rugby Club.

The focus is on helping little kids develop, not just in rugby but in general. They work on their fine and gross motor skills.

The programme involves children between the ages of three and five.

The Baby Boomers programme takes place at St Declans School and happens during the Union Rugby Clubs training sessions.

The kids practice catching and throwing rugby balls, do drills involving different rugby equipment and play games that improve their coordination and speed. There is no physical contact as the programme is just skills orientated.

The end goal of this programme is to prepare the young players for when they can compete in actual rugby games when they reach the age of six.

Kobie van der Merwe-Da Silva, a manager at Union Rugby and the coordinator and coach of the Baby Boomers, said the goal is to make sure they can catch a ball, pass and have a good basis so other coaches can focus on game plans.” Kobie said.

“We also want to involve more young girls in this program. Most importantly the babies must have fun,” she continued.

Parents interested in making their baby a boomer may contact Kobie on 071 402 1331.
