Howell continues to impress on the rugby field

Female rugby is growing in the south of Johannesburg.

Amber Howell, a Grade 12 learner from Sir John Adamson High School, is a rugby player who has shown great promise since she started playing the sport at her school.

She now plays for the Golden Lions U18 female team as well as her school team, which competes in the Golden Lions League.

Howell started playing rugby in Grade Eight. She then played in the U16 SA Rugby Youth Week, which is the equivalent of the Craven Week. She was also part of the U18 Golden Lions female team that competed in the SA Rugby Youth Week 2024.

She was selected to represent the Lions at the SA Rugby Youth Week due to her impressive performances for her school team.

She hopes to get accepted at the University of Pretoria and play for the Blue Bulls rugby team in the area.

“The Bulls team is very focused on female rugby, so I would love to join them,” Amber said. “Rugby is my passion and I would love to go pro, but first I need to move up the ranks,” she continued.

Amber also plays and trains with the Alberton Rugby Club, which has aided her development in the sport.
Alberton Rugby Club now has senior and junior ladies’ teams.

Coach Mickey Oosthuizen invites ladies who are interested in rugby, with or without experience to join Alberton Rugby Club on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 18:30 to 20:00.
