Teacher turned runner: Alberton High teacher defies odds

Alberton High School teacher, Oscar von Platen, is now an avid runner whose thriving journey began in 2022.

Alberton High School teacher Oscar von Platen has previously made headlines for all the good reasons.

In 2020, he was appointed as the new head of the department for mathematics and mathematical literacy at the school, taking over the reins from the former head of department Luanda Jardine.

Not only has he been following his pursuit of seeking growth within the field of education, but he also enjoys staying fit and encouraging athletes to reach their full potential.

The Verwoerdpark resident is actively involved in school sports, making a significant impact on the lives of many young athletes.

Just recently, he joined scores of other health fanatics during the Johnson Crane Hire Marathon, where he bagged his ‘personal best’, finishing in 59 minutes and 17 seconds in the 10km.

Defying odds

Von Platen’s life changed on July 8, 2014. He tore all his ankle ligaments while on an overseas school tour with badminton learners. His doctor said he would ultimately have lost all use of his foot without surgical intervention.

“My road to recovery was not an easy one – spending at least an equivalent of two years on crutches over an eight-year period. Three surgeries later, including an ankle fusion, I could finally walk pain-free on both feet. I always led an active lifestyle before my injury, but thereafter, I thought I wouldn’t be able to even ride a bicycle again,” he explained.

He undertook the Absa Joburg 10K in September 2022 as his first road race.

“And now I have successfully completed the 2024 Dis-Chem Half-Marathon with another scheduled later in February. My preparation is underway to run the full Cape Town Marathon in October, with my ultimate goal to conquer the Comrades in the very near future,” Von Platen said.

His pathway to this success has included regular yoga sessions at I Believe Yoga Life with Carol Twigg, regular strength training, an improved diet and a focus on the importance of his mental health.

“As a teacher, I am motivated by my learners to always strive for the best. As the school’s cross country coach, I have made it my goal to not just stand on the sidelines but to join the training and practice,” he said.
