Alberton’s international tennis star keeps momentum going

Alberton’s own internationally renowned tennis player Tatenda Mutetwa is now entering his second year of university and has managed to keep the pace going.

A year ago, Hoërskool Marais Viljoen High School alumni Tatenda Mutetwa started his first season and academic term in the United States and he says he had a great start in his sporting journey abroad.

Internationally renowned tennis star Mutetwa left the country in his matric year to pursue his tennis dream in the United States after receiving a life-changing tennis scholarship to pursue his passion for tennis.

The talented sportsman got a four-year bursary to play tennis at Lewis University in Chicago and to represent the school in tennis. Over these years, he will be studying for a degree in supply chain management.

While having a great time in the US, he continues to show off his skills and keep the momentum going.
He said his first year went well, and he settled in very quickly.

“I liked the place when I arrived. I happened to win a tournament in my first appearance for the school. I won the Devil’s Event of an invitational well in my schooling. I have many resources available to me, and manage to use them,” Mutetwa said.

In the previous weekend, he took part in a highly-contested tournament where he placed second in the first invitational tournament of the year.

When the spring season started in January, Mutetwa did not start off to a great beginning, but thanks to hard work and much commitment, he managed to turn things around.

He thanked his sponsors, Prominent Roofing Alberton, Sport and Fitness Gym and Real Athletes Tennis Academy for their assistance.

“Thank you to Prominent Roofing and the owners of the company who have supported me in my journey. I would like to also thank LAT Tennis Academy in Florida for the great coaching they provide, which enabled me to get to a good school,” he said.
