Booysens Boxing Club produces South African champions

After 95 years of boxing excellence Booysens Boxing Club still produces top boxers.

Booysens Amateur Boxing Club has one of the proudest legacies in the history of South African sport.

The club, founded in 1928, is still going strong and has produced some of the finest national, Gauteng and district champions.

In all the years, the club had many wonderful and talented trainers such as head trainers; founder Uncle Jack Eustice, Grant Webster, Herbie Vermeulen Senior and Nicky Ness.

Ness is still the head coach, assisted by Duncan Morris, also an ex-Booysens Boxer with loads of experience.
The club’s boxers are very active and compete almost every week in competitions.

Some boxers will, on August 5, take part in a Gauteng development tournament in Heidelberg hosted by Sedibeng.

Producing champions is what they do, and 2023 is no exception.

The following boxers represented the club at the JHB Championship:

Elite boxers: Louis Malajika (originally trained by the late Billy Herfud), was runner-up at the JHB championships but unfortunately had to withdraw as of work responsibilities.

Sachin Govender received a silver medal at Gauteng Championships and a bronze at the South African Championships in the 86kg.

Representing Gauteng at the South African Championships in Tzaneen are Nicky Ness (coach), Sinclare Ness, Sachin Govender and Hoosein Isaac.

Hoosein Isaac won gold at the Gauteng Championships and gold at the South African Champions in the 91kg division. Isaac is also part of the South African national team and has already represented South Africa on several occasions.

Mpendulo Msimanga received a bronze medal at the Gauteng Championships. He could, unfortunately, not box in the final round of the round-robin competition at the Gauteng Championships, as he had a cut on his eye from the previous fight and was not cleared as fit to box.

Mpendulu Msimanga weighing in at 48kg competed at Gauteng Championships.

Samu Radebe came in as a replacement for Louis Malajika and won a silver medal at the Gauteng Championships.
Thulani Mazibuku (South Hills Amateur Boxing Club) also took part in the Gauteng Championship.

The only girl, Keabetse Mathane, was unopposed at the Gauteng Championship and won a bronze medal at the South African Championships.

In the junior section, Sinclare Dlabatshana Ness competed in the 51kg and won gold at Gauteng Championships and gold at the South African Championships held in Tzaneen.

Keyaan Myburg will represent Booysens and JHB Boxing at the Gauteng School Age and Youth Championships.

Booysens will host a woman’s tournament on August 9 as awareness of Woman’s Month at the Premium Fitness Centre in Meyersdal at noon.

The day will have loads of exciting ladies’ fights with some local dancers as entertainment. Pro-woman boxers will also make their appearance by showing their belts.
