Bassonia JKM’s Micheal Bennett proves you’re never too old

Last year was a bumper year for Michael Bennett of Bassonia JKA as he was awarded a black belt shodan at the Karate Syndicate Grading which was held recently.

The 60-year-old proved that it is never too late to obtain a black belt.

Bruce Smith (seventh dan), Earl Opperman (sixth dan), Gert Aucamp (sixth dan), and Karyn Smith (fifth dan) were among those present.

“Michael’s son Graeme is a Nidan (second dan) at the club and has been a member since he was a small child, as well as a top level competitor in his own right. Michael decided to join his son in 2016 and the two still enjoy training together because, as the saying goes, ‘Families that train together, stay together’,” said sensei Karyn Smith.

The academy holds classes for all ages Monday to Thursday with special Dinky classes for the little ones (ages four to seven).
