Coenie Lamprecht (15), a multiple SA champion, recently travelled to Abu Dhabi UAE to represent South Africa at the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation World Championships.

Alberton North resident Lamprecht practices MMA at Valhalla Gym and Fitness Centre to cultivate his skills.

With one gold, one silver and two bronze medals, South Africa placed ninth out of 27 countries. This year, MMA competitions were at a very high level with youth entering at orange belt levels.

His first two bouts ended in victories for Lamprecht, but he lost the third by decision, which knocked him out of medal contention. It saw him place fifth in the world in his age and weight class.

Lamprecht said that the passion and love he felt at the gym inspired him to do the sport every day.

“Coenie is a shining example of what hard work and dedication can do and we at Valhalla MMA are extremely proud of his achievements in the sport,” said his head coach Shane Carr.

Lamprecht has since returning from overseas won a gold medal at the Submission Kings/Queens/Kids Grappling Tournament held at the Walter Sisulu Hall in his weight division securing him a spot in a future one-on-one match at the tournament.
