Race for Victory takes to the road again

The Rand Water Board Race for Victory on September 9.

THE Rand Water Board Race for Victory will once again be staged and organised by Frances Vorwerg School in order to raise funds on September 9.

This prestigious road cycling race classic event is an official qualifier for the Cape Town Cycle Tour 2019 and attracts some of the elite cyclers in South Africa.

The familiar start and finish venue being The Circus situated in Daleside, Randvaal, along the R59 highway.

The starting times for the different categories vary from 6am to 8am. The three distances are the 54km for the less fit, the main 110km classic for serious cyclers and the tough 150km challenge for elite racers only, which takes in the steep hills of the famed Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve.

Past winners of this renowned race include famed riders such as Darryl Impey, Reinardt Janse van Rensburg and Willie Smit (2017), all professional cyclists currently on the World Pro Tour circuit.

The top local professional teams such as Pro Touch, BCX, Office Guru, Cycle Power, ACDC Luso will challenge for the generous R70 000 prize monies on offer. Other racing licensed categories (age groupers) are catered for as are the seeded PPA groups.

In the past, this race has offered some amazing refreshments and handouts sponsored by Clover, Coca-Cola and Ola; ice creams, cold drinks and recovery snacks have always been well received by the often exhausted riders as they collect their finishing medals.

Netcare will be present to ensure cyclers have necessary first aid if need be, with the Think Bike Motor Bike marshals assisting with the traffic and cyclists. Midvaal Traffic Department, Ekurhuleni Traffic Department as well as JMPD, will attend to all the major intersections.

All proceeds of the event go to the fund-raising efforts of the Frances Vorwerg School, who caters for physically and mentally challenged children as well as any other beneficiary appointed by Rand Water.

In these tough economic times, many sporting events have been forced to be cancelled but Rand Water Board have been steadfast in their support for the school and cycling. This race is now in its 24th year since inception.
