THERE are quite a number of young guns from the Alberton and Southern suburbs showing their boxing talents lately in the ring.

Boxing 5, presented by Unleashed Sports Events, in conjunction with Boxing 5 Promotions, was held on May 6 at Turffontein racecourse.

In front of a sell-out crowd, the new kids on the block made name for themselves during the well-organised Boxing 5 tournament.

For the first time, Boxing 5 gave the pundits the chance to put their money on their favourite boxer and make a few bucks out of them.

The tournament boasted four pro-debuts which also earmarked development boxing under the auspices of Boxing South Africa.

The Sunday afternoon kicked off on a high note with the cruiserweight bout between Lebo Mashitoa and Mduduzi Moyo over a four rounder. The newcomer to the professional ring, Mashitoa, boxing from out the Hunter Gymnasium showed his class to win by unanimous points decision by the judges notching up his first pro-debut win by 40/36, 39/37, 40/36.

The second bout saw newbies to the ring, Sheldon Schultz and Earl Warne in the welterweight division over four rounds. Schultz, from the BRD Boxing Academy, outclassed his opponent Warne and won by TKO in the second round 29 seconds.

The main attraction of the day featured former heavyweight South African boxer, Mike Schutte’s son, Mike junior, who climbed into the ring as the favourite, but also on his pro debut. He faced Petrus Cilliers in the cruiserweight contest schedules for four rounds. The promising Schutte showed his finesse and didn’t take long before he planted a bomber on Cilliers to record his first KO in the first round 1:38.

The main bout, however, was between Clement Kamanga and Byson Gwayani in the junior welterweight division in an eight rounder. At the weigh-in Kamanga said he was on a mission to become the best in his weight division and he gave proof of that when he outscored Gwayani. Kamanga, who is trained by Lionel Hunter, showed consistency and won by split points decision by the judges.

In the other bouts Asiphe Ntshili beat Xolisa William in the junior featherweight division over six rounds by TKO second round 1:24.

Paul Mangxilana and Anslin Booysen put up a good fight, but it was always the stronger Mangxilana, to take full honour in the featherweight division over six rounds. He won by unanimous points decision 60/54, 58/56, 59/55.
