Nother Russia steals the show at Royal Raceday

Royal affair at the Royal Raceday at Turffontein racecourse.

GLAMOUR was at the order of the day when the Royal Raceday, presented by Her Serene Highness (HSH) Princess Charlene of Monaco, took place in the South.

Turffontein racecourse welcomed racegoers with a touch of royalty when the gents had to wear their top hats and tails and the ladies were dressed to impress on April 21.

Miss South Africa 2017, Dr Adè van Heerden, stepped in as ambassador at the royal affair, together with Olympian and South African former swimmer Ryk Neethling, at the handover in the winners circle.

Princess Charlene was unable to attend the meeting but she thanked all who supported the Royal Raceday.

A number of high profile guests made their way to the Turffontein racetrack to enjoy a warm autumn Saturday in Johannesburg of which HSH Princess Charlene of Monaco’s father Mike Wittstock, who represented her on the day, and some of his friends and family were present.

It proved to be a delightful afternoon for jockey Craig Zackey and Nother Russia who stole the show when she trotted home for the second consecutive time winning the R1-million HSH Princess Charlene Empress Club Stakes over 1 600m.

It was befitting for Sherri Slack from the Oppenheimer family, with champion trainer Mike de Kock, to take full honours in the main race and more so to have Nother Russia crowned as the “Princess” on turf.

Outsider Al Danza from the Geoff Woodruff yard made a late dash but had to settle for second place.

This was Nother Russia’s eighth win from 17 starts and she has amassed nearly R3-m in stakes.

The HSH PC Empress Club Stakes is a contest for fillies and mares at weight-for-age terms over 1 600m and usually draws uncommonly strong entries.

Beneficiaries for the race day went to The Highveld Horse Care Unit and Gugulesizwe Primary School, all projects dear to the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation.
