Union and Alberton face off

Local derby between Alberton and Union Bulldogs.

IT’S derby time when near neighbours will kick off their season in the Golden Lions Rugby Union Pirates Grand Challenge Pool 2 competition.

A-Square Forklift Alberton and Union Bulldogs will not only have a welcome start to the season, meeting each other for a league match, but will also play for the Kevin de Klerk Cup in the local derby.

Alberton has won the Kevin de Klerk Cup once and it is currently on display at A-Square Forklift Alberton’s club. Their counterparts from the South have won it three times in a row – which makes this derby well worth while!

The match will be played at A-Square Forklift Alberton’s home grounds on Friday, March 31. All the teams will be in action and the first matches will start at 6pm. The third and u.21 teams will play at 6pm, the second and u.19 teams will play at 7.40pm and the first teams will meet at 9pm.

According to Hennie Welgemoed, chairman of Union Bulldogs, the club from the South has lost a lot of players and has had to obtain players from clubs such as Raiders and Pirates to strengthen their corps. “We have a good side now and are looking forward to a good season,” said Welgemoed.

Union training takes place on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm to 8pm, at the Klipriviersberg Recreation Centre. For more information about Union Bulldogs, contact Welgemoed on 083 289 9176.
