Ziervogel is top woman paddler in seeding race

Dusi seeding race at the Florida Lake Canoe Club, sponsored by Tops Spar.

THE Tops Spar Dusi seeding race was hosted by Florida Lake Canoe Club on December 11, on the Klip River, from Daleside to Meyerton, and was the final river race of 2016.

KwaZulu-Natal’s Sibonelo Khwela, of the Eurosteel team, won the race in 2:12, despite being unfamiliar with the Klip River. This is no surprise, however, as Khwela is one of the most competitive river paddlers in the country.

Albertonian Morgan Ziervogel, a member of the Johannesburg Canoe Club (JCC), once again proved herself to be the top Gauteng woman paddler. Ziervogel took on the challenging race with two long running portages, to finish in a time of 2:50 as the first u.23 woman competitor and first woman paddler overall.

Ryan Simonato and Gavin Steyl, also from JCC, won the sub-veteran category as well as the first K2 double kayak in a time of 2:31.

The 33-kilometre race was tough, in accordance with requirements for qualifying for the FNB Dusi, and included a couple of two-kilometre runs while carrying the canoes.

It provided a superb opportunity for the racers in Gauteng to improve their fitness and endurance, as well as their start batch seeding at the upcoming FNB Dusi event scheduled for February, the world’s toughest endurance canoe marathon.
