The Giant is back at Suburbs

Troy de Paiva, managed by Brian Mitchel, will be at the Southern Giant.

The much-anticipated 2016 Southern Giant boxing tournament sponsored by Hunter Fitment Service Centre and Parts will take place over this coming weekend.

The end of the biggest tournament in the South will take place over two days. Saturday, October 29 will boast a bumper 15 amateur fights and Sunday, October 30 will see professional boxing at its best. The Southern Giant will be staged at Southern Suburbs Recreation Centre, Berg Street, Oakdene.

The proceedings will start at 10:00 on Saturday with a strongman competition put together by well-known ring announcer Peter Magoniggle. Sunday will see Lionel Hunter open the day at 10:00 with praise and worship and then he will deliver a sermon on Being My Brothers Keeper.

The amateur fights on Saturday will include a match-up between Reggie Mogashoa, who is the longest-running member of Fight with Insight, and Sacha Thesner from Alberton. Both are on winning streaks as Mogashoa KO’d the South African prospect at the trials this year and Thesner is also coming off a recent KO win.

The highlight will be when boxers from the Entheos Boxing Club, which looks after underprivileged children in Swellendam, take on the Fight With Insight children. Both programmes mirror the same virtues to uplift and empower minors.

The professional boxers will have their turn on Sunday. Up-and-coming Jade Karam against Dennis Mbat from Nigeria, trained by Harold Volbrecht, in the middleweight category will surely be the highlight of the line-up.

Mandla Mpofu, a middleweight from Box Office Gym, will face Bukasa Kabandanyi from Congo, trained by Ashley Fourie. Troy de Paiva, middleweight, will be making his debut as will Shaun Potgieter, who will take on Wikus Ludeke in the heavyweight division.

Altogether 10 fights will be showcased on Sunday. Tickets for Saturday are R50 and Sunday is R150 or R500 for dining. Contact Anton Gilmore on 083 653 0190 or Jade on 011 436 1678.
