Paddlers warm up for marathon

Paddlers from JCC prepare for Fish River.

AS the weather warms up, and the Hansa Fish River A Grade River Marathon draws closer, Gauteng paddlers are out in full force to prepare for the big water event in Cradock – 80kms of sheer adrenalin and fun!

Florida Lake Canoe Club hosted the 22km Tops Spar Klip River Race from Daleside to Meyerton on Saturday August 28. This race provided newly registered paddlers with opportunities to gain points for A Grade status, which will allow them participation in the Hansa Fish River Marathon, in October.

The transformation programmes in Gauteng have proved immensely successful and the winners were u.23 Siseko Ntondini (Soweto), followed by u.18 Alex Masina, from the South, in 1:21;22.

Michael Roy and his partner, Derrick Oliver, from the Johannesburg Canoe Club at Wemmer Pan, finished in 1:4 as the second Master age category finishers, while u.23 Morgan Ziervogel won the women’s race in 1:37.

The first weekend of September will see the Gautengers heading for the Free State, to participate in the 70km river race that runs from the Ash Water Highlands Project to the Vaal River.

A month after that they will be in Cradock, for the 80km Hansa Fish River Marathon.
