JCC members show finesse in canoe champs

Top three Mixed doubles finishers at Canoe champs.

JOHANNESBURG Canoe Club members showed their finesse in the mixed doubles championship over the weekend, finishing in top position.

On a glorious morning, Canoe Concepts hosted the annual mixed doubles championship race, from The Makery in Henley-on-Klip, to the Danie Maclean Park in Meyerton, a distance of some 20km.

Gauteng Canoe Union’s annual prize-giving recognises the double and single kayak champions annually, as well as the mixed doubles for both male and women combinations, in a race specifically dedicated to those teams.

It was certainly not a surprise that Alex Masina (u.18) and Morgan Ziervogel (u.23), from Wemmer Pan’s Johannesburg Canoe Club, were in the running for this award, as both have proved their ability in the past year – with Alex winning numerous podium positions at river races and being widely recognised as the top u.18 paddler in Gauteng.

Morgan has also earned recognition, as the current top woman river paddler, with a variety of podium positions.

The weekend’s championship was a tough, hard-working race, but the young couple were up to the challenge and clinched first place on the podium in 1:04, with the Dabulamanzi team finishing five seconds later and the couple from Soweto Canoe and Recreation Club two seconds after that.
