SA u.17 team take on near neighbours

The draw for the 2016 Council for Southern Africa Football Association Cup has been conducted.

THE South African u.17 national soccer team has been drawn in leg A together with near neighbours Namibia to play in the regional tournament.

The draw for the 2016 Council for Southern Africa Football Association Cup was conducted on Friday July 1. The tournament will be played in Mauritius from July 22 to 31.

The Amajimbos has been drawn together with Namibia and the host nation Mauritius and Seychelles in Group A while the other four teams have been drawn in Group B. They are Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique and Madagascar.

The teams will be split into two groups each containing four sides, with the top two sides in each pool advancing to the semi-finals.

South Africa u.23 team won the COSAFA Castle Cup tournament in Namibia recently, the region’s senior championships, and are also holders in the u.17 age group which was last contested in 2012.

Assistant coach of the Amajimbos, Shawn Bishop said, “We will definitely be going there to perform well and emulate what the senior side did recently in Namibia winning the COSAFA Cup. I know that Group B has all the stronger sides, but if we go onto the pitch it’s all about 11 on a side and we have to go out there and win the play-offs.”
