Night of Reckoning: Purse money of almost R1 million at stake

Night of Reckoning will see top flight boxing in South Africa.

THE Cinderella of sporting codes in South Africa is definitely outgrowing her shoes. How can boxing still be considered to be a failing sport?

On offer and starting on June 11 a nifty purse of R900 000 for the winner is at stake when the “Night of Reckoning” kicks off with its first showcase.

The first of the Super Four cruiserweight contest will take place on Saturday, June 11 at Emperors Palace in conjunction with Golden Gloves promotions.

The four stars have already fought their way through to be part of this highly contested event. Johnny Muller and Kevin Lerena, who have a large contingent of fans, will face off with their opposition from abroad. Muller will meet the highly rated Micki Nielsen from Denmark in his bout in the Super Four, while fellow South African Lerena will take on Roberto Bolonti from Argentinia.

The winners of the two bouts will be seen fighting for the big prize in October.

“If you’re South African, you have no problem getting motivated for a million Rand-plus,” said Muller. “I am training hard for this one and have my eyes on the prize money.”

“We have great sparring partners at the gym and are training very well to be able to go all 12 rounds,” said Lerena, who has also set his eyes on the big purse. “I would not mind boxing Muller once again in the final as I know that I will beat him once again,” said Lerena.

To top up the proceedings, Simphiwe Khonco and Siyabonga Siyo will sweat it out for the IBO mini-flyweight belt.
