Family day at the boxing makes a difference

Come out and watch boxing as a family on Sunday April 24.

THOUGH there is virtually no or very little support from the official structures to develop boxing in South Africa, a little light shines at the end of this dark tunnel.

Boxing does have a support structure in that trust funds and organisations are prepared to fork out the necessary funds to help develop it and give it longevity.

“We have been supporting boxing development and now we can see the fruits of our insights some 10 years ago,” said Vusi Zwane, Peermont corporate affairs and CSI executive. “Perseverance and handing gloves and (boxing) bags to boxers who want to take up the sport has finally paid off.”

Some 10 years ago the Golden Palace boxing club was initiated by both Golden Gloves Promotions and Emperors Palace in Hammanskraal and made it possible for their first professional boxer to his first outing in the ring.

Lucky Mongebane came through the development stages and has been nurtured for eight years. He now fights out of the Harold Vobrecht stables. He will display his skills in the junior-lightweight division over four rounds as one of the undercards featuring a WBA Pan-Africa/SA Cruiserweight title fight.

The Brawl for it All boxing tournament will be showcased as the second of the development boxing tournaments which will take place on Sunday, April 24 at Emperors Palace and staged by AfricanRing in conjunction with Golden Gloves Promotions.

On the main card will be the rematch that had to be put on hold for 18 months between Johnny Muller and Kevin Lerena, who holds the South African Cruiserweight belt. Both will slug it out for the vacant WBA Pan African title, while Lerena’s SA title will be on the line as well.

As this will be the main drawing card for families to rock up and enjoy boxing at its best, it is, however, all about development boxing.

On the development side, the event will feature boxers the likes of Sterling Shaw (junior-middleweight) and Ronald Malindi (bantamweight). Hansie Carr from the South will take on Nkaimeng Leraba in the junior-middleweight division. It will also feature Brandon Thysse from Alberton (junior-middleweight), while Joshua Studdard takes on Sihle Jelwana (junior-bantamweight) and up-and-coming star DeeJay Kriel takes on Ayanda Dulani in the junior-flyweight division.

As development boxing tournaments will carry on during the year, boxers will now also have a platform to display their skills and get the opportunity to be better professionals.

Boxing starts at 14:00. To book your seats contact Jeff Ellis on 078 457 3030.
