SA’s Chukuru is road tripping

The much loved and ever popular national team mascot, Chukuru the rhino, visited three major South African cities.

THE Paralympic Games, is only a year away and Monday, September 7, marked exactly 365 days to go before the opening ceremony of the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The much loved and ever popular national team mascot, Chukuru the rhino, visited ­ Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town on Monday to raise awareness of the 2016 Rio Paralympics.

In each city Chukuru was introduced to the public who had the opportunity to mingle and have their commemorative photos taken with him.

The one-year-to-go show kicked off in Gauteng where Chukuru visited OR Tambo International Airport.

He was also in Durban, the city that recently won the right to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games, a first for the African continent. Chukuru was accompanied in Durban by multiple national F42 shot put champion, Tyrone Pillay as they handed out chocolates to commuters.

The final stop was in Cape Town where Chukuru was joined by F37/F38 javelin throw world champion Reinhardt Hamman.

“Our athletes are honing their skills in various parts of the world in preparation for Rio 2016. Our excitement is growing and with one year to go, the focus is firmly on what each athlete can deliver in Rio,” said Gideon Sam, president of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc).
