New Home for C-Max Roller Derby League

C-Max Derby league to take place in the South each Friday evening.

C-MAX Roller Derby League, the longest running roller derby league on the continent of Africa, has found a new home at the Portuguese Hall, Turffontein, in the South.

After enjoying four fruitful years at an indoor sports complex in Modderfontein, the bulldozers finally moved in and the league was forced to find an alternative venue for their three home teams, the Raging Warmones, Slam Damsels and Thundering Hellcats. Their travel teams are made up of women from the home teams, the Joburg All Stars A and B teams and their associated men’s league, the Lightning City Rollers and their recreational league, the T-Recs league.

Roller derby started in the USA in the mid-1930s, as a women’s entertainment sport on banked tracks and, for the rest of the 20th century, endured on and off cycles. Its revival in its present form, with the emphasis on athleticism, started in Austin, Texas, early in the 2000s when the Texas Roller Girls introduced women’s flat track roller derby. It has grown exponentially worldwide and there are now over 3 000 leagues. Men’s roller derby followed a couple of years later and now has around 50 leagues.

C-Max Roller Derby League held their Fight to the Finish Home Season Three bout at the Portuguese Hall, on May 15, between the Raging Warmones and the Slam Damsels. The Raging Warmones won 213 to 71. On Friday, June 12, the Slam Damsels face off against the Thundering Hellcats in the Fight to the Finish Home Season Four bout.

Come and witness these exceptional athletes battle it out in this full-contact sport on Friday evening at the Portuguese Hall, Turffontein. Doors open at 19:00 and the game starts at 20:00. For more information email info@cmaxrollerderby.com or visit the website www.cmaxrollerderby.com.
