Showjumping returns to Turffontein

The return of graded show jumping will be back after a hiatus of eight years.

SHOWJUMPING will return to Turffontein Racecourse on Sunday, May 24.

The return of graded show jumping will be back after a hiatus of eight years and will run in conjunction with a Turffontein race meeting.

Event organiser, Brett Webber, a licenced racehorse trainer and the chairman of the Free State Show Jumping Association said: “I’ve been in involved in the equestrian world since I first learnt to walk. My mother had ‘horse fever’ and I was born into the saddle. I always rode but only started competing as a teenager.

“My desire was to be involved in an equine discipline and, after completing an Equine Physiotherapy course with the world renowned Winks Green, I soon found myself working for champion racehorse trainer, Jean Heming. An opportunity presented itself to work with Tony Millard, another champion trainer, and I joined him as an assistant trainer and physio.

“After a four year stint I started to freelance as an Equine Physiotherapist for a multitude of racehorse trainers. My desire to train horses resulted in me taking out my open licence in 2004. I still train a string at the Vaal Racecourse in Vereeniging. I started a riding school which complemented my racing stable. The idea to stage a jumping event in conjunction with a race meeting was the result of brainstorming with a Phumelela representative. “

Many of the competing horses are ex-racehorses which could have had uncertain futures if it were not for showjumping. Horses like NachtMusiek, The Entertainer and Los Colmos will take their place in graded events from 09:00. The organisers expect between 160 to 200 entrants in the 10 classes.Spectators will be treated to excellent jumping as well as the Listed Syringa Handicap which will showcase the horseracing aspect of the day.

Entrance to the event is free and hospitality tables, including a four-course-meal, can be purchased at R175 a head. Jumping starts at 09:00 and will continue until 17:00. Bookings can be made with Brett, 079 830 0660 or email: brettwebracing@gmail.com
