EXCITEMENT builds as the field for Intercontinental Village Day has been drawn.

The R2-million President’s Champions Challenge over 2000m at Turffontein on Saturday April 25 will feature some of the best in horseracing and all present can look forward to a great day full of fun and excitement.

The gates will open at 11:00.

The Barrier Draw for Champions Day took place on Wednesday April 15 and the field was paired up with their communities, charities and media partners.

Caxton South’s newspapers, Alberton RECORD, Comaro CHRONICLE and Southern COURIER are the selected media partners to respectively, Alberton Record, Lebanon, St Charbel Helping Hand World organisation; (country and charity) while Comaro CHRONICLE will support China and the Hong Hing Chin Old Age Home, and Southern COURIER’s country and charity is Scotland and Touch of Care.

There are five Grade 1 races on Champions Day – the President’s Champions Challenge, the R2-million SA Derby over 2 450m, the R1-million Computaform Sprint over 1 000m, the R1-million SA Nursery over 1 160m and the R1-million Wilgerbosdrift SA Oaks over 2 450m.

Four Grade 2 events will also be run on the day – the Gold Bowl over 3 200m, the Camellia Stakes for fillies and mares over 1 160m, the Gerald Rosenberg Stakes for fillies and mares over 2 000m and the SA Fillies Nursery over 1 160m.

In total, almost R9 million in stakes money is there to be won.

One person who will be delighted, who opted for the Champions Challenge rather than the Wilgerbosdrift SA Oaks, is Sean Tarry. His charge, Siren’s Call, with Alberton jockey Piere Strydom, will be aiming to clinch the R1-million bonus on offer for winning all three legs in the Wilgerbosdrift Triple Tiara.

With the Gauteng Fillies Guineas and the SA Fillies Classic already in the bag, the daughter of Elusive Fort is just one win away from becoming the third filly to claim the Tiara.
