UJ’s winning ways continue

Varsity Cup rugby each Monday at the various universities.

LOCAL Johannesburg university side FNB UJ convincingly beat their opponents NMMU 42-13 on Monday March 2 in the Varsity Cup competition.

FNB Shimlas stormed to the top of the table of the FNB Varsity Cup with a tightly contested 21-16 win over Maties. Elsewhere, UCT thumped CUT 90-8 while Pukke beat Tuks 42-37.

UJ 42-13 NMMU

UJ out-muscled a plucky FNB NMMU-Madibaz 42-13 in a tough Varsity Cup match in a windy Port Elizabeth. A dominant display by the Johannesburg students’ forwards saw them outscore their opponents by six tries to two as they claimed a bonus-point victory away from home. The home side were in charge early on, but the tables soon began to turn as UJ hit back almost straightaway.

UCT 90-8 CUT

FNB CUT-Ixias were crushed 90-8 by FNB UCT Ikeys at the Green Mile. UCT ran 12 tries past the newly promoted team from the Free State as they secured a mammoth victory on their home turf.

Pukke 42-37 Tuks

FNB NWU-Pukke claimed a dramatic 42-37 victory over FNB UP-Tuks in Potchefstroom to hand the visitors their first defeat of the season. Both teams scored five tries in a match that went right down to the wire, the home side clinching the points in the end.

Shimlas 21-16 Maties

FNB UFS-Shimlas went to the top of the FNB Varsity Cup standings with a gritty 21-16 victory over FNB Maties in Bloemfontein. The Free State side are the only team that remains unbeaten after four rounds of action, while Maties are still searching for their first win of the season.
