Biggest cup competition to commence

Nedbank Cup 2015 is all fired up to begin this week with some 32 teams taking each other on throughout the country.

KNOWN in South Africa as the FA Cup, the Nedbank Cup 2015, is all fired up to commence in this week with some 32 teams taking each other on throughout the country.

The Nedbank Cup 2015 also marks the last cup competition in the Premier Soccer League, but not the least as this prestigious cup competition has a purse money of R7 million. All the 32 participating teams will walk away with at least R100 000 as they battle it out over the next weeks.

The winners of this competition will also get the bragging rights to compete in next year’s CAF Confederations Cup. The current holder of the Nedbank Cup from the South, Orlando Pirates, is playing in the competition at this stage.

An interesting encounter that football fans are eagerly anticipating, is between current Nedbank Cup Champions Orlando Pirates and Tornado FC. While the Nedbank Cup champions will be competing in the CAF Confederations Cup, they will need to overcome the man who handed them their continental star when they take on Jerry Skhosana’s Tornado FC.

Nedbank Cup has produced some of the country’s top performing stars, such as Andile Jali, who is now seen as the pride of Matatiele. The former AmaTuks and Orlando Pirates anchorman joins a long list of Nedbank Cup graduates who were given a platform by the country’s biggest club competition to make their football dreams happen.

Following in the footsteps of Jali is 2014 Nedbank Ke Yona Team captain Sydney Masana. The 24-year-old striker is set to make his debut in the Nedbank Cup as a regular striker of Free State Stars, after being signed on a two-year contract, following an impressive display in the 2014 Nedbank Ke Yona Challenge against Orlando Pirates.

“The Nedbank Cup is one of many ways in which Nedbank continues to reach out to the communities it serves. We are looking forward to another exciting Nedbank Cup that will add to the countless memories that South Africa has of the Nedbank Cup,” said Sydney Mbhele, Divisional Executive for Group Marketing at Nedbank.

The first round will end on February 25, followed by the next round which will commence with the draw for the last 16 teams taking place on February 26.
