Kaizer Chiefs are still top of the log with 18 points while Orlando Pirates are sitting in third with eleven points.

NATURENA – Kaizer Chiefs have built on their lead in the ABSA premiership over the weekend, while Orlando Pirates have been saved by a late goal.

ABSA Premiership matches have been in full swing over the weekend with all the teams in action. The Southern-based teams have both recorded wins over their opponents. Chiefs toppled University of Pretoria 2-1 and Pirates won by a narrow margin of 1-0 against Bidvest Wits.

The weekend’s matches delivered some exciting soccer to both fans and clubs. Kaizer Chiefs are still top of the log with 18 points, while Orlando Pirates are sitting in third with 11 points.

Reneilwe Letsholonyane’s scored Kaizer Chiefs’ winner to hand his side their sixth win out of six matches on Saturday September 13 at the FNB Stadium.

Geoffrey Massa netted from the penalty spot to give his side an equaliser, but it was in vain as they lost their first match away from home this season.

Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter recalled his tried and tested generals in Siphiwe Tshabalala, Bernard Parker, Siyabonga Nkosi and Morgan Gould to the starting 11 for the first time this season, in a much changed line-up from the usual one seen in the infant stages of this season. Brilliant Khuzwayo, meanwhile, got the nod ahead of Riyaad Pieterse to replace the injured Itumeleng Khune.

Pirates vs Wits

Orlando Pirates beat a strong side from Bidvest Wits, who just wouldn’t go away, 1-0 in the dying minutes of their match in an ABSA Premiership match at Orlando Stadium on Saturday night.

It was a quick start to the game with some sloppy defending by Pirates, allowing Wits a chance with a goal as early as the third minute, when a cross from the right was met by Sibusiso Vilakazi, but he saw his header superbly saved by Senzo Meyiwa.

A minute later the action was at the other end of the park as Kermit Erasmus broke behind the Wits defence.

This was the order of play throughout the match, which ended in an own goal by Wits goalkeeper in the 84th minute.

Siya Sangweni unleashed a 24-yard thunderbolt that struck the right-hand post and then into the back of a diving Rowen Fernandez and over the goalline, 1-0.
