Candle lite bowls at Herbert Park

No torches, floodlights, lighters, or any other form of light, other than candles to play bowls at Herbert Park Bowling Club.

NO torches, floodlights, lighters or any other form of light other than candles that lined the rinks, with one candle at each end of a rink, were allowed at the recently held Candle lite Bowls at Herbert Park Bowling Club.

This event was a fundraiser for sending 20 players to Potchefstroom to enter the Potchefstroom Mielieland Bowls Competition in October later this year. It attracted four rinks of trips (24 bowler) who braved the bitter cold afternoon and night of bowls, to have some fun and test their ability to adjust from playing in the afternoon sun, to going into night time playing. Although most players were experienced players, most of these players battled to adjust to these conditions, which prompted the organisers to allow the use of cellphone torches to see the jack during the night time games. With a cup of soup, hot dog rolls, which were kindly donated by Rob Dennis and family, a few glasses of sherry, brandy and beer, the night did not appear to be so cold after all.

The organisers of the evening entertainment, who suffered from a case of night blindness, were not sure who the actual winners were, as their writing on the score board was not so good, so they awarded the “competition” to Skip, Milton Cummings, and his two merry ladies. However, the night entertainment proved to be a success in terms of fundraising.

As far as the pairs, round-robin, fundraiser Saturday competition is concerned, the competition is going well, with Ronnie Bell and team mate Kenny Caulder having won all three of their games played, but with another eight games to go, Bell and Caulder still have to play against the partnership of husband and wife team Robert and Christine Sergel, and the partnership of Harry Olivier and Geoff Raynard.

The upset of this competition, partnership of Rob Dennis and Louis Jatho, who were tipped to do well, have only won one game out of their three games played. But, as mentioned earlier, there is still a long way to go and all 11 teams entered are proficient bowlers in their own right and the winning pair could be any one of the 11 teams.
