Sasol Banyana Banyana on tough course

Banyana will be playing in their first leg of the African Women’s Championship qualifier, scheduled for Friday May 23.

JOHANNESBURG – SASOL Banyana Banyana will leave on a tough venture when they play away from home over the weekend.

“This is the first time that I will coach a team who will play away from home, but it is a very important match. I have asked for tough matches beforehand, and that is why we have played Ghana over the weekend,” said Head coach of Banyana, Vera Pauw, ahead of their qualifier.

Sasol Banyana Banyana coach Vera Pauw named a 20-member squad to travel to the Comoros, to play the first leg of the African Women’s Championship qualifier, scheduled for Friday May 23.

Sasol Banyana Banyana lost 1-0 to the Black Queens of Ghana on Sunday afternoon May 18, in an international friendly match played at Dobsonville Stadium.

“I work in a very structured way, and we still need to improve on the last third of the field. The match against Ghana saw a vast improvement to the previous matches. We need to score goals, and against Ghana it was a question of millimeters. We will improve on our attacking game this week and hopefully it will work.

“The result against Ghana was not vital, what was important was to identify areas which needed improvement. Generally, the girls played well, but they still need to work on being ruthless in front of goals,” said Pauw.

The team is expected to depart for the Indian Ocean Islands on Monday May 19, and Coach Pauw is confident they will return home with a positive result.

Pauw said the girls played well against Ghana, but were indecisive in front of goals.

“Had we taken all our chances on Sunday, the final scoreline could have read differently. But overall, I am happy that we have a base to work on going forward,” she concluded.
