Soweto’s rowing stars shine at SA Champs

SA Rowing champs took place and Soweto club excelled.

A GOOD haul of medals at the 59th South African National Rowing Championships rewarded the Soweto Rowing Club’s hard work and dedication during the 2013/14 summer rowing season. Six of the Soweto Rowing Club members netted eight medals between them at the regatta, held at Roodeplaat Dam north of Pretoria on April 12 and 13.

Club stalwart Rotha Mampuru took silver in the men’s C scull, then gold in the men’s double with Ithumeleng Moepeng, and went on to complete the set with bronze in the men’s quad with Lebogang Tladi, Khumo Moemise and Theo Velaphi, who attend Thotolore High School. The under 18 coxed quad also took home bronze medals.

Dedicated Soweto Rowing Club coach Jacob Phela said: “I am pleased with our rowers’ commitment and improving performance. They deserved to reap these rewards for their hard work this season. The support we have received from Holy Rosary School in Edenvale has been a great encouragement to our rowers and has boosted our spirits, which no doubt aided our performance. Next season I’m sure Soweto will be even more of a force to be reckoned with!”
