Schools in curtain raisers

GAUTENG Cricket Board and Bidvest Wanderers Stadium are looking forward to hosting two schools curtain raiser matches ahead of the RAM SLAM T20 matches being hosted in Johannesburg this weekend.

bizhub Highveld Lions are set to face the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras on Friday January 31 and Sunfoil Dolphins on Sunday February 2. On both days schools matches will be played at the Bull Ring ahead of these matches.

St Stithian’s College’s u.13 team will face the GCB Lions u.13 team at 13:30 on Friday January 31.

Randburg High School First XI takes on the St John’s College First XI on Sunday February 2 at 09:30. This match is part of the Quarter Final Round of the Gauteng Cricket Board leg of the Coca Cola Schools’ T20 Competition.

Greg Fredericks, Chief Executive Officer of the GCB, is looking forward to seeing the youth in action at the Bull Ring. “The GCB is committed to giving youngsters all possible opportunities to grow them, not only as cricketers but also as human beings. These schools are amongst those that contribute largely to the GCB and bizhub Highveld Lions pipeline. I am excited about being able to give them the opportunity to play at the stadium where many world records have been set before,” Fredericks said.

Thabang Moroe, President of the GCB and member of the bizhub Highveld Lions board, sees this as something that should be done whenever the opportunity presents itself. “Cricket, in essence, is about far more than just the physical game that you play. It is about heart, passion, dedication and I hope that we can ignite some of that in these youngsters as they step across the rope on the weekend. I expect nothing less than to see some great cricket being played,” Moroe said.

The gates will open at 12:30 on Friday and at 08:30 on Sunday. Tickets will be on sale at the gate and will be valid for the headline match as well.
