Siqva’s skopo (sheep’s or cow’ head) business rakes in cash for the KZN man

WHAT started off as a means to making a living is turning into a booming business for Siqva Mabiala.

The 25-year-old from Haddon sells skopo (sheep’s or cow’ head) to taxi drivers in Jozi. He is originally from Empangeni in KZN.

He wakes up at 4am and starts cooking. He has been in the business for more than five years and every cent he earns goes back home to support his family.

His skopo costs R30 or R35 if pap is included. Taxi drivers value his food because it’s hot. They call him skopo chef because after eating his skopo you will lick your fingers.

Siqva operates on Joubert and Plein streets in Jozi from 8am until 5pm. He even makes deliveries to places such as Turffontein, Booysens and surrounding areas.

On Fridays he brings in an extra helping hand and he works long shifts to cater to commuters and students in addition to taxi drivers.

Next to his stall there is a group of card players he also services. When they want to have something to eat they buy skopo only from him.

Siqva said to the COURIER: “I started this skopo thing because I needed something that can bring in money for me because if I have no money I will end up smoking or stealing. This is not an easy business because first of all, you have to split the cow’s head into two and clean it for 15 minutes. From then on I remove all the hair from the head and buy spices that will please customers. It will take one hour to finish cooking skopo. After that, I will be done and ready to serve customers.”

He believes that one day he will own a restaurant where he will sell skopo only.
