Residents warns about new criminal scam

Resident urges others to be extra cautious.

Yes, another car theft victim, but with a warning. My car was stolen at a church in Alberton on October 28.

Fox Security personnel reacted and they were patrolling in the area. They deserve a compliment, also to the police officers who came to my house to take the statement.

A few days after the incident I received a phone call from a warrant officer, pretending to be a SAPS member. He warned me about the damage that can be done to my car while impounded at a police station. Apparently, the cars are kept there for up to six weeks.

As a special favour, he can organise to get my car released within two days. He even offered to bring the car back to the Alberton SAPS. On his arrival, he would call me and then I can identify the car before it is handed over to me.

For this favour, I shall have to put something on the table. I repeatedly asked, “What does this something on the table mean?” Needless to say, I got no answer.

He then gave the phone to the brigadier, who will be signing the release documents. He also requested something on the table, before he can sign the release documents. I then asked him for his phone number so that I can contact him after I have spoken to my insurer. He told me that it is not the protocol to give out phone numbers, but an EFT can be done easily.

Here I stopped the call. It is very obvious that this is not legal and above board.

Later in the afternoon, I received another phone call from the same person with the same number. I was told that we didn’t finish our arrangements and we must do it.

Now my car was apparently found in Musina, Limpopo.

What I find very disconcerting is that they knew my name, surname, cell number and the details of my car.
Due to the fact that there are so many discrepancies, I became suspicious and realised it is yet another scam and bribe.

I just want to warn other car theft victims. Be aware.
