Old age homes to be fixed, ‘hope these are real promises’

"It will be appreciated if law and order can be maintained at Reuven Old Age Home."

The article in the COURIER (February 11) had residents of Reuven Old Age Home talking because for many it was good news.

The fact that Reuven was mentioned had the residents overjoyed that at last their hope for proper maintenance to their flats will become a reality.

We wish to thank the new MMC for his efforts to make life tolerable for us.

We are glad that he mentions the security at the old age homes although we have a wall with razor wire around the complex and 24-hour security guarding the place.

It is unbelievable that thieves can enter the premises and steal whatever they want. This has been going on for the last two or three years and yet nothing has been done thus far.

Thieves have been stealing wheels, batteries and light fittings from cars parked inside the complex, costing the owners thousands of Rands to replace it.

They are now stripping the brass pipes from the solar geysers, the meter boxes from the distribution containers leaving the place outside in darkness. Most of the wires and connectors are removed from the poles holding the light bulbs.

There are two huge openings in the walls where the thieves can gain easy excess.

Many of the residents believe it is an inside job.

There are presently many illegal people living at Reuven and although they have been warned by distributing letters from Mr JJ Davids, regional head of the housing department to vacate the premises, nothing has come of it.

People continue to live as they wish. Many of them show utter disrespect for the elderly by openly drinking alcohol in the open, loud talking and swearing and fighting.

It will be appreciated if law and order can be maintained at Reuven Old Age Home.

DF Daise (on behalf of the Reuven residents)
