Response to “Why must we live in this disgusting place?”

Unfortunately, this has been the case in excess of 20 years and cannot, therefore, be blamed entirely on the DA-EFF “unholy marriage” referred to by Ward 124 Councillor Mnyameni.

I refer to the article which appeared on the cover page of the Southern COURIER of February 20.

I do not normally enter into correspondence regarding articles I read in publications, but feel strongly enough about the topic to do so now.

I agree wholeheartedly with the sentiments expressed as these retirement places are an eye-sore from outside, never mind inside the properties. Unfortunately, this has been the case in excess of 20 years and cannot, therefore, be blamed entirely on the DA-EFF “unholy marriage” referred to by Ward 124 Councillor Mnyameni. He stated that he has raised the numerous issues with the housing department to no avail but does not specify since when he has been doing so. Did he do so during twenty-odd years the ANC was in control of Johannesburg? If so, it will be interesting to learn what was done to remedy the situation during that time.

I have been living in the South since December 1964 and at that time, although not perfect, these premises were not nearly as badly maintained as they now are and I must honestly say that I personally would not like to have to live in any of them. My sympathy goes out to the elderly people forced to live at these premises due to a lack of finances.
