To all the pet owners residing in the South

Why do you have pets if you cannot keep them safe and cared for?

In March this year, an approximately three-month-old black X German Sheppard/Foxterrier was living in the park between Harry, Gresham and Lynton streets in Robertsham for approximately six weeks.

Another dog, a two-and-a-half-years-old unsterilised Staffie X was found in the same park in September this year. Both dogs had to be treated for tick bite fever and they were so malnourished and dehydrated.

Why do you have pets if you cannot keep them safe and cared for? If you have pets and can no longer keep them, please call the SPCA (011 681 3600) or the AACL (011 435 0672) and advise them that you can no longer take care of your animal/s. Do not drop them in a park somewhere to fend for themselves. Would you do that to your child or children? If you are capable of doing that to your pet, which is dependent on its owner, I believe you would do that to your child as well. If you witness a stray animal, please call the SPCA or the AACL and inform them.

A great man, Mahatma Gandhi, said: “The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” Unfortunately, this is not the case in the South of Johannesburg!
