Tribute to Thandi Klaasen

A reader's heartfelt tribute to Thandi Klaasen.

Thank you for teaching us the lessons which we otherwise would not have learned. Your courage showed one can still smile even after reality’s flames leave us scarred and burnt

You warned: “Comparing yourself to others will make it seem like you are worse or better than the rest”.

You taught us that doubting one’s own ability does nothing good but paralyse you from giving your best. No one could bruise your spirit; you wonderful woman with the generous soul. No one could steal your joy, you gentle giant with the heart of gold.

You never allowed the doomsayers to think yours was a envelope they could fold. Instead, adversity made you resilient; a character trait which cannot be stolen or sold.

Your approach always: “Shoulders back and head lifted like never before. Tackle the obstacles and teach the inexperienced about winning this war!”

You will always be one of the strongest people Eden Park has been blessed to know. We will remember you as the lady who, throughout life’s seasons, never lost her glow.

As you join the “great jazz concert in the sky”, we say “until we meet again, but never goodbye”.

Until we meet again we will sing you a praise song as the Eden Park community.

We will remember you with songs of love and laughter, thanksgiving and liberty. We, mere students, whereas you master at the art of delivering each note with passionate wisdom and heartfelt sincerity. Still, we will honour your memory and teach songs of hope to children who have lost their own identity. We salute you as we continue to sing your songs of triumph not just bravery.

As we reminisce we will sing songs to free the many still caught in the vicious grip of mental slavery.

When you adopted so many of us, neighbours and friends, as your very own, little did you know your heart would become the very place so many called home.

Thank you for allowing even me to sit in the front row of your supporting fan stand. Your smile was enough to make me forget I was applauding you with only one hand.
