Women’s issues are everyone’s issues

The DA Shadow Minister of Transport and Member of Parliament, Manny de Freitas writes.

LISTENING to some of the other speakers, there appears to be a perception that some issues are women’s issues only. I’m trying to understand this. Are we saying that rape is a woman’s issue only? Are we saying that domestic, physical and any other abuse is only a woman’s issue? Is not paying maintenance a woman’s issue?

There is no such thing as women’s issues as all these and any other issues affect both men and women. We have to all take responsibility for them. This is why I, as a man, can say that I am proudly a DAWN member along with all our male councillors and any DA Joburg South male members. We proudly work hard for DAWN and these issues under the strong leadership of Faeeza Chame, the DAWN chair. In doing so we are fighting for fairness, freedom and opportunity for each and every person irrespective of who they are.

It is thus vital that we all register to vote and we should ensure that we, and every one we know, vote in next year’s Local Government Election, so that the DA can take this city to the world class city that it deserves to be.

To date the ANC has been unable to achieve this as we see services decline day by day, maladministration taking place and the mismanagement of the city as the norm.

The DA has proven it can govern, and that where it governs it can do so well. In those local authorities, they have the lowest unemployment rate with the highest economic growth. In those areas we see the lowest levels of corruption and where it does occur the DA is quick to eradicate these corrupt practices.
