During the festive season we had to accompany one of the seniors to take their dog for an injection against dreaded dog diseases.

The SPCA assisted the public by doing the inoculation for R50, which obviously brought in a lot of people that could really afford to pay for a vet and didn’t need to bring the dogs to the SPCA.

The SPCA is there to encourage people to care for the well being of their pets, but people that could afford it should take their dogs to the regular vets. Shame on the people arriving in a Jaguar, BMW’s and even Mercedes new models. I ask myself the question; do they have a conscience when they arrive to get treatment for their animals? They are often also the last people to donate to the SPCA.

This is not for people that can afford this, but for the needy to be able to afford the treatment for their animals. We have been working with the Reuven Senior Complex and many of these people cannot afford to take their pets to regular vets as it is just too expensive; that is what SPCA should be concentrating on.

I spoke to a retired vet helping out at the facility and she was horrified that this was still happening. She actually decided to retire so as to not have to face this kind of abuse to the system! Seniors have to pay a bigger bill now to get their dogs seen too! Could you live on R1 350 per month? I am sure the answer is – No.
