At about 16:00 on Monday June 9 a fire started to burn on the 18th fairway of the golf course.

There were still golfers playing out there, but nobody seemed to care, they played through the smoke and seemingly said nothing at the clubhouse, as everyone closed up and went home, showing no regard for their neighbours.

At 21:00 I phoned the Kibler Park Fire Station and they gratefully came and put the fire out, which at that stage was engulfing at least one massive tree – which in turn could threaten to fall onto the golf course, neighbours or passing traffic.

The burned-out tree finally fell, with one almighty crack! Exactly 24 hours later it came crashing to earth. Fortunately no one was hurt.
